April 2017 Farm Update

by danberube on April 17, 2017

Hello Farm Friends!

The weather is warming up, and that means fresh vegetables are on the way. I want to thank everyone who has already renewed their CSA for this summer, and welcome our new members. If you haven’t had a chance sign up yet, don’t worry, there is still time to get your order in.

As you may know, we are moving to a new farm location in Dracut this summer. I’m very excited by this move, for the first time all our fields will be in one location and you will be able to pickup at the farm!

I’ve already begun work on the farmsite to prepare it for our first plantings in just a few weeks. The fields are actually in good shape nutrient-wise, which is important because there are literally thousands of seedlings waiting to go in the ground.

I’ve got a couple of exciting things I want to share. First off, our new farm has blueberry bushes! I’ve been working over the past week to prune them, as it has been a few years since they received any TLC. I am seeing new growth on the plants, which means if all goes well we’ll have our first fruit in the CSA this summer.

Secondly, we are seriously upgrading the amount and variety of tomatoes we grow. While I know some of you get tired of kale or zucchini by the end of the season, no one has ever complained about having too many tomatoes. The selection of available heirloom tomatoes grows each year as the public shows more interest in them. We’ll be bringing back all the old favorites, along with some really cool new ones like Blue Cherry tomatoes. I really love sharing these new varieties with you and growing food you can’t get anywhere else, so please share your feedback on which ones we should keep going forward.

Finally, a plug for the CSA – if you haven’t renewed yet – Download the order form, and if you have any questions, please email me at info@berubefarm.com.

For more updates, be sure to check out the Berube Farm Facebook and Instagram pages!

I look forward to seeing you at the farm this summer.

-Dan

2017 CSA Announcement

2017 CSA ORDER FORM

Hi everyone! It’s been a while. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays with your families and if you’re like me, you’ve already had enough snow and are looking forward to the warm weather headed our way.

As many of you know, for the past 3 years Berube Farm has been based out of the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project fields in Dracut, with a satellite plot on Wheeler Road and a greenhouse on Jones Ave. After 3 years in the program, I graduated and have spent the fall looking for a new home for the farm. This is particularly tricky, because not only do I need fields, but I need clean water to wash vegetables, and electricity to power a refrigerator to store crops. Finding this all in one place is not easy.

That is why I am so excited to share that the Brox Family, who have been farming in Dracut for over 100 years, have made 1.75 acres of land available to me on their farm that fits all our needs! Instead of running around from field to field and trucking vegetables across Dracut to wash, store and then give out at CSA pickup, everything will finally be all in one place! It will be so much easier with my attention focused on just one field and not having to run around all the time.

Best of all, CSA pickup will finally be on the farm, which means you can actually walk the farm and see how everything is being grown if you are interested. This is something I’ve wanted for a long time, as it will help build the connection between myself, the farmland, and everyone we are growing food for.

So for all the details. In 2017 the CSA will be 13 weeks. We will be keeping the Thursday and Sunday pickups, and all the flexibility everyone loved last year. Pickup will be at 1374 Broadway Road in Dracut.

For shares we are offering a full season 13-week share for $260, and a half-season 7-week share for $150. As always, you will be able to choose your pickup day week to week.

CSA Shares are on sale now! Download the order form, and if you have any questions, please email me at info@berubefarm.com.

I hope to see you at the farm this summer.

-Dan

August 30, 2015

It’s always a bit difficult predicting when a new crop will be ready for the CSA days in advance. I try to only put crops I consider very likely to be in the CSA in the newsletter because I don’t want to disappoint people, especially our 5-week members who may be waiting for a specific [...]
